Westchester Insider: Westchester County: WESTCHESTER COUNTY RECOGNIZES INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY.

WESTCHESTER COUNTY RECOGNIZES INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY.

(White Plains, NY) – On August 31, Westchester County Executive George Latimer will officially recognize “International Overdose Awareness Day” at a ceremony called “A Day of Remembrance and Awareness.” The ceremony will take place at the City of White Plains Library Plaza, 100 Martine Avenue at 5:30 p.m. The event was created to honor the lives of individuals lost to overdose, and to recognize the people, providers and programs working together to reduce stigma and overdose in Westchester County, and New York State.

The event is co-sponsored by Westchester County, City of White Plains, National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence/Westchester and other members of the recovery community.

In addition to the ceremony, Latimer announced the annual recognition would appear in digital form outside the Westchester County Center. The County is also collaborating with community organizations on several educational and training programs throughout the month of September.

Latimer said: “Overdose deaths can be prevented, and in Westchester County, we are doing everything we can to work together to stop death by overdose. It isn’t always easy to speak up if you think a family member or friend is struggling with addiction, but if you let that intimidation get the best of you, the result could be incredibly tragic. On Overdose Awareness Day, and every day throughout the year, let us come together with our community partners and organizations in the hopes of stopping overdose death in Westchester.”

Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health Michael Orth said: “Many lives have been lost and many families have been destroyed because of overdose.  Let us stop that on Overdose Awareness Day.  We thank County Executive Latimer for officially recognizing Overdose Awareness Day, and his leadership in supporting prevention and life-saving services available here in Westchester County.”

Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Health Dr. Sherlita Amler said: “Overdose is now the third leading cause of death in our country, and substance use disorder is a complex disease that requires an all hands on deck approach to address. Addiction can disrupt and sadly destroy a family, and the consequences of addiction reach far beyond the addict. On Overdose Awareness Day we collaborate as public health and mental health professionals to help prevent, respond and treat those who are struggling.”

Host and Co-Sponsor of the Awareness Event, White Plains Mayor Tom Roach said: “White Plains is please to participate in International Overdose Awareness Day.   Purple lighting of the fountains at Renaissance Plaza, the Lyons Garage, and Library Plaza, serve to mourn the lives lost to overdoes and raise awareness of resources that are available to help people impacted by substance use.  Together, we can turn the tide on the historically high rates of drug related overdoses.”

Executive Director of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence/Westchester Inc. Joan Bonsignore said: “It is important to bring attention to the international crisis of substance abuse and opioid overdose that permeates our society in the U.S. and around the world.  No life is lost in vain. We are coming together to make a difference, and we need to put an end to this fentanyl massacre that is killing our children.”

Executive Director of Friends of Recovery Westchester Inc. Lisa Hope said: “Overdose Awareness Day is an opportunity for loved ones to grieve this type of loss, mostly in efforts to create a safe space for this to be recognized.  Some of the most important goals of this national campaign are to repair the damage that stigma has caused over the years, especially pertaining to the value of a human life.”

For additional information on International Overdose Awareness Day and resources here in Westchester County please contact the Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health at (914) 955-5220.

VIDEO RELEASE: MALONEY HIDES FROM

CONGESTION PRICING TAX.

August 31, 2022

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KvHoSk3gPY

Script:

Elected leaders need to take a clear stance on issues.

Especially issues that cost their constituents money.

So here goes: I’m Mike Lawler, I’m running for Congress in Westchester, Rockland, Dutchess, and Putnam counties -- and I adamantly oppose the planned $23 Congestion Pricing Tax on people driving into Manhattan south of 60th Street.

It’s unfair, unaffordable, and it’ll only make traffic worse in other areas. It’s why I sponsor the bill in Albany to repeal the Congestion Tax and why I’ll fight to stop it in Washington.

Sean Patrick Maloney, on the other hand, always supported the $23 Congestion Pricing Tax. But now that people are getting angry about it -- as they should be -- Mr. Maloney has gone mute.

Go ahead. Try to get Mr. Maloney to tell you where he stands on the $23 Congestion Pricing Tax. Give him a call; see what he says - if you can get him on the phone. It’s 202-225-5441.

I’m Mike Lawler, and I’m leading the effort to stop the $23 Congestion Pricing Tax in New York because it’s terrible for my constituents.

See, Sean. Not so hard.

Westchester Insider: Election Desk 2022 News: Lawler: Millionaire Maloney Making NY Even More Unaffordable.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: LAWLER: HUDSON VALLEY FAMILIES

CAN'T AFFORD MILLIONAIRE SEAN PATRICK MALONEY.

Cites Middle Class Tax Hike, Congestion Pricing Tax, and

$10,000 College Vote Bribe as Trifecta Against

Struggling New York Taxpayers.

August 29, 2022

“Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney insists on making life even more expensive for working- and middle-class New Yorkers already struggling to get by in a state with some of the highest taxes and inflation in America.

“Within just the past few weeks alone, Mr. Maloney has supported a trifecta of new taxes and fees on Hudson Valley families — a middle-class tax increase as part of the misnamed ‘Inflation Reduction Act’; a $9-$23 daily congestion pricing tax on commuters driving into Manhattan south of 60th Street, and a $10,000 student loan giveaway that will force middle-and working-class families to bear the cost of loans taken out by strangers earning up to $125,000 per year. That passalong will be especially galling to hard working trade professionals who couldn't afford college for themselves, but now have to help pay for other people’s higher education.

“Millionaire Maloney is a classic tax-spend-and-borrow extremist who genuinely believes he can spend our money better than we can. He has no sense whatsoever what living in New York is like for people who aren’t as wealthy as he is.

“Millionaire Maloney also broke his promise to reverse the State and Local Tax (SALT) Deduction Cap that hiked taxes on tens of thousands of middle-class Hudson Valley families, despite his Democrat colleagues controlling all three branches of the federal government for the past two years.

“After 10 years living in the Washington bubble, and building his wealth to a level many of his constituents can only dream of, Rep. Maloney is hopelessly out of touch with what life is like for the vast majority of the folks he represents.

“I adamantly oppose President Biden’s naked, $10,000 bribe of students; I’ll stop congestion pricing dead in its tracks if I’m elected, and I’ll give Hudson Valley families real tax relief, which will include the reversal of SALT.

“I’ll get these things done because I know what voters need. Unlike the five-term, millionaire globe-trotting congressman, I actually speak with my constituents. They are desperate for some real economic relief. Perhaps Mr. Maloney missed that memo during his private flight to the south of France.”

Westchester Insider: Westchester County Legislator Mary Jane Shimsky 12th District: Mobile Shredder is coming to the Irvington - Saturday, 9/3.

Mobile Shredder is coming to the Irvington.

Saturday, September 3, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Outside Irvington Library, 12 S. Astor Street.

Residents can bring up to 4 file-size (10”x12”x15”) boxes of confidential papers per household for shredding.  Please remove all large binder clips and covers.  Papers from businesses, institutions or commercial enterprises are not acceptable and will be rejected, as will any junk mail or newspapers.

First come, first served
Service at the events works on a first-come-first-served basis, as the Mobile Shredder unit can reach its maximum capacity before closing time. In extreme weather, events may be cancelled or terminated early.

Please call the county's Recycling Helpline at (914) 813-5425 to check on a cancellation or early closure.

Important information
It is important to be aware of what you place the paper to be shredded – no matches, lighters or anything combustible. Staff at the events will be checking the material prior to being shredded.

Kinds of documents to shred
Remember, it's best to shred documents you're no longer using, that contain personal identifying information such as name, address, phone number, credit card number or social security number. Such documents should be shredded before they are thrown out for recycling. Some examples are:

  • expired credit card statements and receipts
  • old tax returns or any other personal documents containing you name, address or other identifying information.
  • pre-approved credit card applications
  • licenses

As this service is gaining in popularity, residents should be prepared to wait as lines are sometimes long. However, the wait doesn't have to be that long. Come prepared. This means you've removed all metal clips, fasteners, binders, folders and hard covers and placed the papers loosely in a box. Hard covers – cardboard or plastic covers on items such as ledger books, marble composition books and hard-cover books – cannot be shredded and will be turned away. Residents must rip pages out from hard cover books for shredding and throw the covers in their regular household trash. Up to four boxes of papers are allowed for shredding.

For more information about identity theft, call the Dept. of Consumer Protection (914) 995-2155. For questions about recycling, call (914) 813-5425, the Recycling Helpline.

Westchester Insider: Westchester County: COUNTY EXECUTIVE GEORGE LATIMER ANNOUNCES SUCCESS OF BEE-LINE'S SUMMER VACATION ON FARES PROGRAM.

COUNTY EXECUTIVE GEORGE LATIMER ANNOUNCES SUCCESS OF

BEE-LINE’S SUMMER VACATION ON FARES PROGRAM.

Latimer Announces New Cost-Saving Measures to Help Residents Cope with Inflation Moving into the Fall and Winter.

(White Plains, NY) – Whether you were traveling for work, play or a summer beach day – Westchester County residents enjoyed free rides on the Bee-Line Bus this summer from June 1 through Labor Day. The free fares program was valid on all buses in the fixed route bus system including the express route into Manhattan, and the Bee-Line ParaTransit System. Bee-Line bus ridership soared this summer, up approximately 20% on weekdays and 45% on weekends compared to levels in May 2022. Residents who normally purchase a 30-day unlimited MetroCard, saved nearly $400 this summer. Thousands of residents participated in the free rides program, which will conclude on September 6.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “Every dollar counts. In Westchester County, we are working hard to combat rising costs by finding new and innovative ways to provide relief. This summer, we wanted to give people a reason to ride the Bee-Line bus, but more importantly, we want to provide an opportunity for our residents to save some money. While our free fare program may be coming to an end, we have a robust number of cost-saving programs we are rolling out now for residents to take advantage of this fall and winter.”

Free fares on the Bee-Line Bus are part of a larger program Latimer created to address inflation, including free admittance to Westchester County’s pools and beaches on certain days, and free commuter parking at the North White Plains Commuter lot, and the County Center parking lot from July 1 through August 31.

The fall and winter additional cost-saving programs Westchester County residents can participate in are as follows:

Lowering the Sales Tax on Residential Energy

Latimer has proposed lowering or eliminating the sales tax on residential energy on a quarterly basis, from December 1, 2022 – February 28, 2023. The sales tax elimination covers home heating oil, propane, natural gas, electric, coal and wood for residential heating purposes. It covers homeowners as well as rental units, and landlords/renters will be eligible depending on the structure of the unit’s heat and electric use.

Civil Service Exams

Westchester County is waiving the fees for Civil Service Exams through December 31.

Zero Tuition Increase at SUNY Westchester Community College

Together with SUNY Westchester Community College Trustees and the Westchester County Board of Legislators earlier this summer Latimer announced WCC will be holding the line on tuition for the 2022-2023 school year. The flat tuition reflects ongoing challenges faced by students and families who are struggling with rising costs due to inflation, and uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Annual full-time credit-student tuition is $4,730 – the lowest tuition among colleges in the region.

Feeding Westchester and Food Pantry Funding

Latimer has increased funding to Feeding Westchester by $700,000. This doubles what was included in the 2022 budget, and covers the increased cost of food and fuel. Feeding Westchester has experienced an increase this year of $0.71 per pound across the foods they provide, compared to $0.60 per pound last year. Feeding Westchester is also seeing an 18% year over year increase in food costs.

Westchester Insider: Westchester County Legislator Catherine Parker 7th District: Celebrating Women's Equality Day.

Celebrating Women's Equality Day.

As we celebrate the passage of the 19th amendment over 100 years ago, we also recognize that work is ongoing. Celebrate Women’s Equality Day by remaining passionate for progress just as the Suffragettes and not taking their sacrifice for granted. Remember to vote, stay informed on upcoming elections, and support candidates that align with your values. Across the country, women voters and their allies are rejecting government policing of their bodies through the ballot box. We must stay the course to reinstate a woman’s right to choose and regain the ground we’ve lost in the fight for true equality.

This #911Day Honor Those We Lost by Doing an Act of Service for your Community.

Annual Family-friendly Day of Service Will Benefit 18 Local Nonprofits and Bring Hundreds of Local Volunteers Together.

Watch full press conference here: https://youtu.be/4DM9U-8bHtc

(White Plains, NY) – In honor of those whose lives were lost or forever changed by the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Volunteer New York! and Westchester County Executive George Latimer have joined to present, along with support from Major Sponsor Robison Oil, our community’s 12th annual “9/11: Serve + Remember” region-wide day of service that will take place on Saturday, September 10 and Sunday, September 11.

Through volunteering alongside our neighbors, we can build more equitable and just communities that advance racial equity, create opportunity, and foster respect for individual differences. This year’s 9/11 Day volunteer opportunities will address a range of local needs, from supporting food pantries and hunger insecurity to community garden harvesting, outdoor clean-ups, nonprofit painting and revitalization projects, making blankets for children in hospitals, writing cards for our troops overseas, and more. For further info visit volunteernewyork.org/service or call 914-948-4452.

Latimer said: “Each year, Volunteer New York! takes to heart the notion that we must use this day of sorrow as motivation to better our collective tomorrows. We are once again honored to partner with this great organization as we serve and remember – and encourage all Westchester residents to do the same.”

As it has been nearly 21 years since our nation was changed forever, an entire generation of young adults have been born and raised in the shadow of 9/11. Those of us who remember that day remain steeled by the resolve all Americans demonstrated in its aftermath. Including the thousands of local volunteers over the last 12 years who have served as part of 9/11: Serve + Remember. Local students and families are encouraged to participate this 9/11 Day and volunteer together as a way to instill a deeper connection to service and the significance of 9/11 for those born after 2001.

“The more years that pass, the more imperative it is we work even harder to rekindle the spirit of unity and service that arose in the aftermath of the tragic attacks of September 11. It’s a day of tribute to those we lost, and the countless sacrifices made,” said Volunteer New York! Executive Director, Jeanette Gisbert. “This year we have made sure people of all ages and abilities will find meaningful ways to serve. What act of kindness will you do this 9/11 Day?”

TO TAKE ACTION:

Online registration is now open for individuals, groups, schools, and families at serveandremember.org to sign up for one of over 25 family-friendly #911Day volunteer opportunities. Advanced registration is required to participate.

Projects on September 10 will be located on-site at various nonprofits throughout our region. Projects on September 11 will take place at only one of two volunteer hubs: Iona University in New Rochelle and the Shames JCC in Tarrytown. Community members from across the region are encouraged to dedicate any time they can to do an act of service and explore the unique volunteer opportunities and learn more about the many local nonprofits that are being supported.

Westchester Insider: Election Desk 2022 News: Lawler: Maloney Out of Touch on Looming Congestion Pricing Tax.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: LAWLER: MALONEY OUT OF TOUCH ON

LOOMING CONGESTION PRICING TAX PAIN.

August 25, 2022

“Sean Patrick Maloney wants Hudson Valley commuters to pay an extra $23 every time they drive into Manhattan south of 60th Street.

“He doesn’t care that the tax is regressive — hurting working class families most — or that Rockland and Dutchess County families have little viable train service; or that nurses, police officers, firefighters, and others commute in the middle of the night; or that a congestion pricing tax will divert truck traffic into areas with some of the highest asthma rates in the country; Maloney simply wants more taxpayer dollars so he can spend them instead of us.

“Mr. Maloney seems to have no idea that middle- and working-class families are struggling with the highest inflation in 40 years and some of the highest taxes in the nation. Even the so-called Inflation Reduction Act ended up being another middle-class tax increase.

“This is what happens when you live in the Washington Bubble and forget the people who sent you to Congress.”

Westchester Insider: Election Desk 2022 News: NY-17: Primary Night Statement from Mike Lawler: Elections 2022.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: PRIMARY NIGHT STATEMENT FROM MIKE LAWLER: “Hudson Valley Voters Can’t Afford Another Sean Patrick Maloney Term”.

Aug 24, 2022.

“Sean Patrick Maloney is completely out of touch with Hudson Valley voters. When we needed public safety, he gave us cashless bail. When we needed tax relief, he raised taxes. When inflation began eating up household budgets, Maloney, Pelosi, and Biden raised middle class taxes and spent hundreds of billions more, guaranteeing higher inflation. When we needed SALT deduction relief; Maloney rubbed salt in our wounds.

“Maloney doesn’t understand our needs because Maloney doesn’t live like us. He uses tax dollars to fly in and house household employees. He has a government car and driver and expects us to pay $23 to enter Manhattan with his new Congestion Pricing Tax. He galivants around the world on government junkets while we’re hard at work, and travels the country working to reelect America-hating radicals like AOC and Ilhan Omar instead of working for us.

“I actually talk to my neighbors, and more importantly, I listen to them: Here’s what they say:

    • “Prices at the pump and at the supermarket are killing us;
    • “We’re already paying the highest property taxes in America, we literally can’t afford Maloney’s new tax hikes;
    • “We need the SALT tax reversed; cashless bail overturned, and police budgets re-funded;
    • “We need solutions in Washington, not endless partisanship and progressive madness, and
    • “We want our children educated, not brainwashed.

“I congratulate Congressman Maloney on his primary victory, but will work day and night to defeat him on Tuesday, November 8. My neighbors literally can’t afford another two years of him in Congress.”
