(White Plains, NY) – Following the sudden passing of Reginald A. LaFayette, County Executive George Latimer vowed to honor the long time Westchester leader and Democratic Commissioner of the Westchester County Board of Elections. Now, Latimer will follow through on this vow by introducing legislation which would rename the County Office Building located on 100 East First Street, Mount Vernon, New York, the “Reginald A. LaFayette County Office Building.”

Latimer said: “Reggie was a friend, confidant and life-long partner in public service. While no words or actions can bring back the man we loved, and lost, this legislation will help forever cement his legacy in Mount Vernon, Westchester County and New York State.”

Latimer will be joined by fellow elected officials as he discusses the legislation. The official naming of the building will take place following a vote by the Board of Legislators on this proposal.

LaFayette had a long and distinguished career in public service, beginning his work with the City of Mount Vernon. There, he served as Deputy Comptroller, before spending fourteen years as City Clerk. Beginning in 1999, LaFayette served as the Democratic Commissioner for the Westchester County Board of Elections—a position he held until his death. LaFayette also held the positions of Executive Chair of the New York State Democratic Committee and was a member of the Democratic National Committee. He served as a Delegate for the National Democratic Convention for former Secretary Hillary Clinton in 2008 and President Barack Obama in 2012.

LaFayette had been a Democratic District Leader in Mount Vernon since 1972, was a member of the Black Democrats of Westchester and had been a Prince Hall Mason since 1983 and a member of Progressive Lodge No. 64 for thirty-five years.

In addition to being a dedicated public servant and active member of his community, LaFayette was a great friend to many and caring father to his two children.

Westchester Insider: Choice Matters: Abortion Access - The Senate VOTES Today!

Today’s the day!  The Senate is voting on the Women’s Health Protection Act!
(You can listen to the speeches & vote livestreamed here - https://www.senate.gov/floor/The vote is scheduled for 5:30 pm.)

In 2021, more abortion restrictions were introduced, and more were passed into law, than in any year since Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973. Over 500 laws have been pushed through state legislatures by anti-abortion lawmakers since 2011, making abortion impossible to access in many locations around the country.

Passing the Women's Health Protection Act has never been more important.

27 cities have become “abortion deserts,” where people travel 100+ miles to reach a provider.

With the US Supreme Court about to issue their Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision and Texas SB8 in effect for 6+ months, NOW IS THE TIME!

Bronx Insider: Sports Desk: Manhattan Edged by Fairfield Sunday.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Manhattan Edged by Fairfield Sunday.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Ant Nelson led three in double figures with 20 points for Manhattan Sunday, but it was not enough in a 66-62 loss to Fairfield.

There were nine ties, seven lead changes, and neither Manhattan (14-13, 7-11 MAAC) nor Fairfield (13-16, 7-11) led by more than 10 points.

The Stags built a nine-point second half, 55-46, with a 16-5 run that lasted six minutes. Over the next five minutes, Nelson would score seven of his 20 to bring the Jaspers to within five, 60-55, with 2:18 to play.

A Nelson 3-pointer after a Josh Roberts offensive rebound made it a four-point game with 1:38 to go.

Jose Perez stole the ball from Jesus Cruz at midcourt. After Cruz fouled him to make it 62-60 Fairfield with 1:20 to play, Perez then converted two free throws.

With the Jaspers down two with 15 seconds left, Roberts stole an inbounds pass at midcourt and found Nelson, who could not hit his ensuing jumper. Fairfield would make its next two free throws provide the winning margin.
