FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Manhattan Edged by Fairfield Sunday.
RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Ant Nelson led three in double figures with 20 points for Manhattan Sunday, but it was not enough in a 66-62 loss to Fairfield.
There were nine ties, seven lead changes, and neither Manhattan (14-13, 7-11 MAAC) nor Fairfield (13-16, 7-11) led by more than 10 points.
The Stags built a nine-point second half, 55-46, with a 16-5 run that lasted six minutes. Over the next five minutes, Nelson would score seven of his 20 to bring the Jaspers to within five, 60-55, with 2:18 to play.
A Nelson 3-pointer after a Josh Roberts offensive rebound made it a four-point game with 1:38 to go.
Jose Perez stole the ball from Jesus Cruz at midcourt. After Cruz fouled him to make it 62-60 Fairfield with 1:20 to play, Perez then converted two free throws.
With the Jaspers down two with 15 seconds left, Roberts stole an inbounds pass at midcourt and found Nelson, who could not hit his ensuing jumper. Fairfield would make its next two free throws provide the winning margin.
