Press Release from the Westchester County Board of Legislators.

STATEMENT FROM WESTCHESTER COUNTY EXECUTIVE GEORGE LATIMER ON INCIDENT IN ROCKLAND COUNTY.

STATEMENT FROM WESTCHESTER COUNTY EXECUTIVE GEORGE LATIMER ON INCIDENT IN ROCKLAND COUNTY.

“Westchester County stands with the people of Rockland County and condemns the horrific act of violence last night in Monsey.
“I have directed the Westchester County Police Patrol Units to conduct additional inspections of synagogues and any other Jewish facilities within our jurisdiction.  If any are occupied, we are having our officers stop in to reassure that we are here to protect them.
“This is in addition to the continuing Operation Safeguard Taskings which have been ongoing for more than a week in our County in conjunction with New York State Police.  These Taskings consist of daily inspections and high-visibility patrols of places of mass gatherings, transportation facilities and retail centers. County Police also has a detective partaking in the response to the incident in Rockland County.

“This is a very holy time of the year, one where we must come together and protect and support our neighbors. We pray for the victims and pray that unity and tolerance prevails.”

DID YOU KNOW WESTCHESTER COUNTY AIRPORT IS HOME TO THE CORPORATE ANGEL NETWORK?

DID YOU KNOW…

Westchester County Airport is Home to the Corporate Angel Network?

(White Plains, NY) – Each month, the “Did You Know” video segment of the My Westchester newsletter explores a different topic that is unique, and little known about Westchester County. This month, we went to Westchester County Airport to visit with the Corporate Angel Network. The Corporate Angel Network is a non-profit organization that has been based at Westchester County Airport for the past 35 years, which helps to coordinate flights for cancer patients seeking treatment using corporate aircraft.

The Corporate Angel Network pairs empty seats on private and corporate planes with cancer patients who need to be transported to treatment at no cost. Their model not only improves patients’ chances of survival, but also reduces their emotional stress, physical discomfort and financial burden.

If you have something you are curious about, or something you think no one knows, send us an email at Communications@WestchesterGov.com. Your idea might just appear in a future edition of “Did You Know.”

LATIMER CALLS ON FEDERAL LAWMAKERS TO VOTE TO RESTORE SALT DEDUCTIBILITY.

WESTCHESTER COUNTY EXECUTIVE GEORGE LATIMER CALLS ON FEDERAL LAWMAKERS TO VOTE TO RESTORE SALT DEDUCTIBILITY.

“I thank the Westchester Congressional delegation for co-sponsoring the Restoring Tax Fairness for States and Localities Act (H.R. 5377) and for thinking of the people in Westchester County, sitting at their kitchen tables paying bills – and with them in mind, acting to stop this assault on the middle class.  I strongly urge the U.S. House of Representatives to vote for this legislation, which would eliminate the $10 thousand dollar limit SALT deductions for 2020 and 2021.

“In Westchester County, more than 47% of residents itemize their federal tax deductions with an average of $34,300 in deductions, well above both the cap and the new standard deduction. This results in double taxation on the same income, and effectively raises taxes on thousands of middle-class and working families in Westchester who depended on the deduction. Many of our federal representatives have championed this issue – I now ask others to join the fight.”

Westchester County Desk: EMERGENCY REPAIRS UNDERWAY IN OSSINING.

EMERGENCY REPAIRS UNDERWAY IN OSSINING.

(White Plains, NY) – The Westchester County Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) is working to mitigate damaged caused by a force main break on Kemeys Avenue in Ossining that is causing raw sewage to seep into the Hudson River. Currently trucks are working to capture much of the raw sewage from reaching the river.

Village and Town of Ossining officials along with residents in the area have been notified.  The Department of Environmental Facilities anticipates the break will be repaired late tonight.

About 30k gallons of raw sewage is flowing into the river an hour, and the incident was discovered this morning.  The force main break is about 150 feet north of the Kemeys Cove pump station and about 150 feet south of Revolutionary Road in Ossining.

Contact with the sewage should be avoided.  According to the Westchester County Department of Health the volume is not enough to have a significant impact on the Hudson River.

COUNTY EXECUTIVE LATIMER ANNOUNCES OPEN HOUSE WITH THE FAA IN NEW CASTLE.

WESTCHESTER COUNTY EXECUTIVE GEORGE LATIMER ANNOUNCES
OPEN HOUSE WITH THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADVMINISTRATION IN NEW CASTLE.

Open House to provide opportunity to discuss Airport Noise and Air Traffic Procedures.

(White Plains, NY) – Westchester County Executive George Latimer is announcing an open house with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in New Castle regarding Westchester County Airport. The open house will include participation from HMMH, an environmental and transportation planning consultant which recently completed a noise study for the County, Westchester County Airport officials, and the FAA.  It will be an opportunity to learn more about the study, air traffic procedures in the area and airport operations, in a more informal environment. Westchester County residents are invited to attend at any point during the open house, where they will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with a variety of experts, without formal presentations. Latimer requested the open house after hearing concerns from the New Castle community, in an effort to better understand the issue. US Senator Charles Schumer, US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and US Congresswoman Nita Lowey supported the request of this open house.

Latimer said: “We want the residents of New Castle and the surrounding communities to know that we hear their concerns, and we are making every attempt to make this process better. If we can work together with the FAA to reduce the impact on those affected by aircraft noise, we can ensure that Westchester County Airport reminds a vibrant transportation hub, an economic benefits driver, and above all else a good neighbor to our residents.”

Schumer said: “I’m pleased that FAA has headed our call and will finally be able to hear the concerns of Westchester residents at a public meeting focused on noise pollution from Westchester County Airport. We pushed for this public meeting so that the FAA can hear the serious concerns from Westchester folks and present ways to mitigate and respond to these concerns.”

Gillibrand said: “Excessive airplane noise harms the quality of life in our communities, and for too many Westchester residents the level of aircraft noise has become intolerable. That’s why, earlier this year, I called on the FAA to meet with the Westchester community, and I’m hopeful that this open house will serve as an important first step to provide residents the relief they deserve. The FAA must be transparent and commit to addressing the concerns of New Yorkers. I was proud to partner with Senator Schumer, Congresswoman Lowey, and County Executive Latimer in this effort, and I will continue to fight to ensure the FAA works with the Westchester community to finally reduce overhead flight noise.”

Lowey said: “Over the last several years, communities near Westchester County Airport have raised concerns regarding aircraft noise. I am pleased that the FAA is taking those concerns seriously and has heeded our request to come to Westchester. I congratulate County Executive Latimer for his hard work to lay the groundwork for FAA’s visit by holding public meetings and studying noise impacts.”

New Castle Town Board Member and Supervisor-elect Ivy Pool said: “I truly appreciate the collaboration and partnership we have with County Executive George Latimer’s office, and the responsiveness of our Federal elected officials, Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and Congresswoman Lowey. This meeting with the FAA is an important step towards finding fair, equitable solutions for Westchester communities, including New Castle, that have been adversely impacted by airport noise and other environmental concerns. We are pleased to host this meeting and look forward to a productive exchange.”
