(White Plains, NY) – Westchester County Executive George Latimer, the County’s LGBTQ+ Advisory Board and other advocates will host a ceremony in which the County will once again raise the Progress Pride flag to kick off June as Pride Month in Westchester.
Latimer said: “Each year, we host a flag raising ceremony to ensure all who live here know that Westchester is a welcoming community, no matter who you are, what you look like, who you love or any other distinction. Like our flag raising ceremonies for various ethnicities throughout the year, we look forward to celebrating with Westchester’s LGBTQ+ community as we kick off Pride Month.”
The LOFT LGBTQ+ Community Center Executive Director Judy Troilo said: “Pride is a celebration of our existence. This is why we need to come together like never before, to show the world that we are willing to fight for our right to exist. We are so grateful to stand next to our County Executive, George Latimer this Pride season who has worked tirelessly alongside us, making it clear that the LGBTQ+ community is welcome in Westchester. We encourage everyone this Pride Season to show up to your local pride events and thank your leaders for taking a stand against hate and supporting equality, dignity, and respect for all!”
LGBTQ+ Advisory Board Chair Christopher Oldi said: “In a time where other states and localities around the country are legislating hate against LGBTQIA+ people, knowing that we are supported, legally and societally, by Westchester County elected officials and administration provides a great sense of relief and comfort to know that being who you truly are in Westchester is respected, protected, and welcomed. The LGBTQ+ Advisory Board applauds the County Executive and his administration, as well as The LOFT LGBTQ+ Community Center, for providing an event and space where we can celebrate our diversity and strength as a community.”
The event will take place on the front steps of the Michaelian Office Building in downtown White Plains. Working with the Advisory Board and the County’s Department of Public Works/Transportation, the front steps of the County Office Building will be painted with the Progress Pride flag.
During the ceremony, Latimer and the Advisory Board will also present LGBTQ+ Leadership Awards to County Libraries including the Westchester Library System, Lewisboro, New Rochelle, Peekskill and White Plains.
Following the awards and flag raising, Latimer and the Advisory Board invite residents to participate in Westchester Pride, The LOFT’s Pride Month festival taking place on Court Street outside the County Office Building.
