2023 WESTCHESTER COUNTY ENVIROTHON HELD AT

SAL J. PREZIOSO MOUNTAIN LAKES PARK IN NORTH SALEM.

 

(North Salem, NY) – Earlier today, local students participated in the 2023 Westchester County Envirothon at Sal J. Prezioso Mountain Lakes Park in North Salem.

Fourteen public and private high schools across Westchester and Putnam Counties were represented by 22 five-to-seven-person teams, each competing in the Envirothon and testing their knowledge of environmental topics includingsoil, aquatic ecology, land use, forestry, wildlife and climate change.

 

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said, “Once again, Westchester County students showed off their exemplary knowledge of the environment at the Westchester County Envirothon. I’m thrilled local youngsters have this knowledge and passion to make educated decisions bettering the future of the County.”

 

Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, Kathy O’Connor said, “Mountain Lakes Park in North Salem provides a diverse environment and is a great home for the Westchester County Envirothon. I’m delighted to have welcomed students back to participate and show off their environmental knowledge.”

 

The 2023 Westchester County Envirothon was cosponsored by the Westchester County Soil and Water Conservation District (a subdivision of the Westchester County Planning Department) and Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, with support from the Westchester Parks Foundation, Watershed Agricultural Council, New York Sea Grant, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Westchester County, Save the Sound and NYC Department of Environmental Protection.

 

Westchester County Planning Acting Commissioner Blanca P. Lopez said, “In only our second year of hosting this regional Envirothon event at Mountain Lakes Park, we were able to double the number of partner organizations providing their expertise to over 22 student teams from returning and new high schools across Westchester and Putnam Counties. We are excited to see this education program grow in the coming years.”
