MaryJane Shimsky Condemns Supreme Court Overturning Roe v. Wade; Urges Legislature to Reconvene to Pass Constitutional Amendment Protecting Abortion Rights.

MaryJane Shimsky, County Legislator and candidate for NYS Assembly in the 92nd District, today released the following statement:

The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is nothing short of devastating. After 50 years, the right of women to control their own bodies has been stolen from us, despite the fact that this right is essential and life-saving. I am infuriated that once again men are restricting women’s freedom and right to control over one's body -- something that no one even questions with regard to men.

The right-wing majority on the Supreme Court proved yesterday, with their decision legitimizing indiscriminate gunfire on American streets, that they really care nothing about human life. What they do care about is a far-right political agenda that is wildly out of step with the American people, with the people of the State of New York, and the people of the 92nd Assembly District. And as horrific as the last two days have been for the people of this State, they are not done with their agenda -- birth control, LGBTQ+ rights, and so many other rights we all take for granted, will likely be on the chopping block in the coming years.

We cannot allow this ruling to set us back, and we must do everything we can to protect reproductive rights and healthcare. I thank Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins for her courageous leadership in passing the Reproductive Health Act. After today's ruling I am confident that she will continue her leadership and I am hopeful that our legislators will return to Albany to pass Senator Liz Krueger’s constitutional amendment – it must get done. Here in Westchester, my work on protecting reproductive rights will make a major step forward as we pass my Clinic Access legislation in the coming days.

In Albany, we're going to need legislators who will work cooperatively to pass effective legislation promptly, and not those who value their self-serving prose over getting things done for the people of the 92nd Assembly District. It is time for action, and I hope that such vanity does not get in the way of the Governor's badly-needed special session.
