Westchester Insider: Westchester County Legislator Erika Pierce 2nd District: File a PSC Complaint Plus Updates for NYSEG Customers.

File a PSC Complaint Plus Updates for NYSEG Customers.

A reminder to residents that you can still file a complaint with the PSC. At the Board of Legislators, we continue to be concerned about the impact of spiking utility bills on County residents.  Our Environment, Energy & Climate Committee has been investigating this issue and has sent letters of complaint to the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC), which regulates the utilities. For the PSC to grasp the full scope of the problem, however, it is also important for residents who have been impacted to file complaints directly with the PSC.

This includes residents hit by:

  • Bad meter readings
  • Meter problems, especially accounts where meter numbers were estimated for months in a row or estimated readings were very low, leading to catch up bills
  • Customers facing high "catch-up" adjustment bills, including those with large adjustments after billing delays
  • NYSEG customers with day/night meters seeing extreme increases
  • Customers in community solar programs with delayed billing, or billing missing detail

File a PSC complaint:

To file a complaint, you will need your account number.

Updates for NYSEG Customers:

While there is no crystal ball to tell us the rates ahead, Day/Night meter rates have lowered in recent days. Any resident can check current and historical rates for either type of meter here.

NYSEG is also making progress in catching up on billing for customers signed up with community solar. If you are one of those customers and have not received your catch up bill yet, be aware that you may receive a large bill in the near future. NYSEG will arrange a payment schedule with you for that bill if needed. If you have problems with that process, you can contact my office. If you are expecting one of these large bills and are signed up for auto-pay, consider shutting down auto-pay to protect yourself against having the full payment amount deducted from your account.

And lastly, if you are having a hard time understanding your bill, this may be helpful.

Emergencies:

If you are at risk of having your utilities shut off, you can call a special PSC Shutoff Hotline at 800-342-3355 from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday – Friday, as well as my office. Consumers with hearing or speech impairment can contact the Department of Public Service through the NYS Relay Service by dialing 711.
