The second Career Expo follows the success of the Department’s first Career Expo that was held on March. The Career Expo is designed to expose probationers, age 16 years or older, to potential employers, training specialists and other employment related services, as well as educational institutions. The Probation Department designed the Career Expo for probationers who are unemployed, seeking new higher-paying jobs, pursuing a career path or change in career, or exploring the various vocational training programs and opportunities available to them. The Career Expo is just one of the many programs provided by the Department, in an effort to rehabilitate and guide probationers to become productive members of society.
Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “The County’s probationers are an untapped resource for Westchester’s workforce. The career expo is the perfect opportunity for individuals to build self-esteem, learn about valuable employment resources, and discover new ways to better themselves for reintegration into society.”
Probation Commissioner Rocco Pozzi said: “We recognize the importance of being able to obtain employment and become self-sufficient, which contributes to improved self-esteem and law abiding behavior. Any assistance the Probation Department can provide to help individuals placed in our care to achieve these goals is our responsibility.”
Probation Officers assigned to the Probation Department’s Services Unit will continue their efforts in assisting individuals with resume building, conducting workshops to improve interview skills, and assisting individuals with obtaining any other services they may need to support themselves in their efforts towards self-sufficiency. Cognitive life skills are also taught to assist probationers in developing better decision-making skills, leading them to make more positive and productive choices in their lives.
