Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Last Friday, I was proud to march in the Pleasantville Fireman’s parade. I pulled double duty, marching first with the electives and then breaking off and meeting my department, Thornwood fire department, to finish the parade route.
Last Saturday, I was honored to present proclamations to the two newest Eagle Scouts in Pleasantville’s Troop 12. Kevin and Luke completed amazing Eagle Scout projects, and in addition to a proclamation, each one had a day dedicated to him complete with their name displayed on the Jumbotron.
Lastly, we at the Board of Legislators are consistently working to find ways to be more efficient. Right now we are taking up a bipartisan proposal that would put the decision in the hands of you, the voters, to move the number of years per term for a County Legislator from 2 years to 4 years without adjusting the previously set 12 year term limit. This proposal will align with the standard set by other counties in New York who have already addressed this.
Changing the term length would be a tremendous step toward better addressing the needs of constituents and managing complex issues in our districts. Rather than perpetually campaigning, we will be able to prioritize crafting legislation, delivering resources, and shift our attention away from politics and back to the reason we were elected in the first place, to more adequately represent the needs of all Westchester residents.
The passage of this referendum would also greatly impact the expenses impacted on the taxpayer associated with coordinating and administering elections. Reducing the frequency of elections would significantly lower those costs, and would allow for those funds to be allocated towards County services.
After the passage of this legislation, the decision will be put up for a county wide referendum for you to vote on at the general election this November.
Sincerely,
Margaret A. Cunzio
Legislator, 3rd District
