Dear Friends and Neighbors,
By now you're probably aware of the crucial roadwork that started and will be occurring for several weeks surrounding the intersection of Route 9 and Route 119 in Tarrytown. The work is the next phase in a $13.9 million project that commenced last spring with the aim of extending the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge side path south to Lyndhurst Mansion and constructing a 270-foot-long pedestrian bridge over the Thruway I-87/I-287 to improve access and enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
The first phase – the extension of the side path – has neared completion, and on May 28, contractor crews began their preparations for assembly of the actual pedestrian bridge by staging equipment and materials, along with setting up the new temporary traffic pattern from just north of Route 119 past Paulding Avenue.
When crews shift from preparation to assembly, Route 9 will have one lane available in each direction near Route 119 and Paulding Avenue between 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on weekdays. Outside of those bridge assembly hours, four lanes will be available with two in each direction. The speed limit will be 25 mph, and motorists are encouraged to use caution and allow for extra time traversing the Rivertowns and Greenburgh where possible. Pedestrians will be able to cross Route 9 through the work zone on its east side and should follow posted detour signs. (Digital-advisory message boards have been placed around the area, and certified flaggers will be directing motorists.)
The Thruway Authority has also provided detailed graphics to illustrate and contextualize the work in its upcoming phases, and those are embedded herein for your reference. Details about the installation of the bridge will be provided at a later date. Finishing work on the bridge will follow, which includes landscaping and other aesthetic features. Later this summer and in the early fall, crews will complete the remaining activities, which include relocating Tarrytown’s water main onto the Route 9 vehicle bridge; repairing and resurfacing Route 9 from Route 119 to just south of Gracemere Lane; restriping the roadway to add the second left turn lane on southbound Route 9; and landscaping at the end of Paulding Avenue.
While there will be some short-term inconvenience, we hope you’ll agree that an innovative infrastructure project that encourages tourism, safe and sustainable travel, and interconnectedness between villages on both sides of the Hudson River is more than worth the temporary disruptions. More information can be found on the Thruway Authority’s webpage - https://www.thruway.ny.gov/oursystem/route9/index.html about the project, and please feel free to reach out to my office with any further questions or concerns, and thank you all so much for your patience and understanding.
Sincerely,
Jewel Williams Johnson
