CONNECTICUT MAN CHARGED WITH VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER AND DWI.
(Hawthorne, NY) -- The wrong-way driver in Sunday’s fatal collision on the Hutchinson River Parkway has been charged by Westchester County Police with Vehicular Manslaughter 2nd Degree and Driving While Intoxicated.
Jose Espinal, 48, of Bridgeport was booked on those charges at County Police headquarters in Hawthorne last night. He was arraigned today in Rye Town Court and remanded to the Westchester County Jail.
Espinal is accused of being intoxicated when he drove his Toyota Highlander southbound in the northbound lanes of travel shortly after 5 a.m. He crashed head-on into a Toyota Camry that was traveling north, killing its driver and causing the Camry to catch fire.
The collision occurred about a half-mile south of King Street in Rye Brook. It is unclear where Espinal entered the parkway in the wrong direction.
The identity of the victim is pending confirmation by the Westchester Medical Examiner’s Office.
